Alternative anti-aging methods
BOTOX
Botox injections are injected into facial muscles to paralyze or weaken the muscle that forms wrinkles. The kinds of wrinkles that are treated are those caused by muscle contractions such as frowns lines, crow’s feet, forehead creases and neckbands.
In general the initial effect of the injections is seen within 3 days and reaches a peak at one or two weeks post-treatment. Each treatment lasts approximately three months and varies between R3700-R5500.
The most common side effects in patients receiving Botox for cervical dystonia are difficult swallowing, upper respiratory infection, neck pain and headaches. Potential complications, when using Botox in the face and neck, occur when too much toxin is injected or when the right amount is injected into the wrong muscles. Inaccurate injections in the forehead or around the eye can cause drooping lids, dry eyes and double vision – too much injected in the neck can cause muscle weakness. It’s generally not given near the mouth, as effecting muscles here would mean difficulty in speaking and eating. The FDA warns all patients about the rare side effects of Botox, which includes paralysis of the body and death.
AHA – ALPHA HYDROXY ACIDS
AHA works mainly as an exfoliant. They cause the cells of the epidermis to become “unglued” allowing the dead skin cells to slough off, making room for regrowth of new skin. AHA may even stimulate the production of collagen and elastin.
The two major side effects of alpha hydroxy acids are irritation and sun sensitivity. Symptoms of irritation include redness, burning, itching, pain and scarring. People with darker color skin are at higher risks, scarring pigment changes with alpha hydroxy acids. The use of alpha hydroxy acids can increase sun sensitivity by 50% causing and interesting dilemma. It appears that alpha hydroxy acids may be able to reverse some of the damage caused by photo aging but at the same time they make the skin more susceptible to photo aging.
Since 1989 the Food and Drug Administration has received more that 10 reports of adverse reactions in people using AHA products. Their complaints included severe redness, swelling (especially in the area of the eyes), burning, blistering, bleeding, rash, itching and skin discoloration.
The FDA believes reactions from AHA are probably even more wide spread. Past experience suggests that for every adverse reaction reported the agency receives, the manufacturer receives 50-100. This would translate into approximately 10 000 adverse reactions being received for AHA containing products.
Important to note that AHA peels as well as others cannot be done around the eyes.
PEELS
Chemical peels remove dead skin cells from the skin surface.
The side effects for chemical peels are similar to that of the worst sunburn imaginable. This means redness, swelling, pain and discomfort, which will take some time to recover. A chemical peel is basically a temporary fix to your wrinkle problems.
Whether or not you are eligible to have a deep chemical skin peel may also depend on the pigmentation in your skin. Plastic surgeons grade the color of skin on a scale (the Fitzpatrick scale) of 1-6 with 1-3 representing the lighter skin types and 4-6 representing darker skin. Skin 5 and 6, which epitomize dark brown and very black skin, are not usually good candidates for deep chemical peels as the skin can bleach out and scar from the treatment If you have a history of heart problems you may also be discouraged from having a deep chemical face peel. This is because phenol or other agents in heavy-duty chemical peel formulations can cause heart arrhythmias. If you have herpes you might also be prescribed medication to prevent an outbreak from being triggered by the peel. An outbreak of sores during the healing stages of the peel can result in permanent unpleasant looking scars.
The costs of deep chemical peels are also much higher that the normal cosmetic face peels.
LASER SKIN TREATMENT
Laser facial resurfacing is a technique that can remove the upper layers of the skin on your face, using laser.
This treatment isn’t suitable for treating the neck, very deep wrinkles or sagging skin.
Skin laser resurfacing carries relatively few risks, but it is best avoided by some categories of people. People with olive skin or black or brown skin is not good candidates for the treatment as it can cause a lightning of the skin and unwanted pigmentation changes. Patients who have taken the drug “Accutane” up to 18 months previously, who are prone to keloid (raised) scarring, or who tend to get infections in the facial area are also discouraged from skin laser treatment.
If your laser skin resurfacing treatment is done by a reputable surgeon there are usually few complications due to the laser therapy itself. However, every ones skin responds differently and there is a small risk of burning or marks from the heat of the laser, unwanted scarring and pigmentation changes - either darkening or lightning of the skin. Rarely, laser treatments can set off a cold sore by reactivating the herpes virus that is dormant in the facial nerves.
After laser skin treatment there will be some mild swelling in the face and the skin remains pink or even red for a few weeks, although this may persist for up to months in some people.
After the treatment the new skin is very susceptible to sun damage, which can cause burns and permanent pigmentation changes.
COLLAGEN INJECTIONS
Plastic surgeons use collagen as an all purpose filler to fix problems on the face. Usually it is injected through a needle into the area that needs “plumping up”. Collagen injections, are injected into wrinkles to reduce the severity of their appearance. They are all used to plumps up lips and add volume to faces that are losing fat and bone structure with age.
Every one is born with a layer of collagen between the skin and the underlying tissues. Chemically collagen is basically a protein. This protein helps construct the network of fibers (also known fascia) that is beneath the skin. This is what supports tissues and gives skin its softness, bounce and volume.
Basically there are 2 types of collagen: Bovine and Human.
- Bovine collagen is derived from the tissues of a cow.
- Human collagen is a bio- engineered product and comes from a human donor.
Receiving a collagen injection is not any more difficult that getting a regular needle injection. However, there are some individuals who may not respond to the treatment as well as others. For instance, individuals with Herpes Simplex might have a severe outbreak triggered once the immune system detects the presence of foreign substances. It could complicate existing infection such as oral or gum diseases. It is definitely not a procedure that is recommended for any one with AID’s or a similar autoimmune disorder.
